I was born in August 1942 in Bradford, Yorks. My father was a Regimental Sergeant Major in the Tank Corps and had been sent overseas that February to Burma to fight the Japanese.  Subsequently my pregnant mother left their rented house, and moved in with her mother, my Gran, to sit out the war. I remember very little about it. I know we had sandbags stacked beside the back door, because much later they were made into a sand pit for me! I don't think Bradford had many bombs, as they were never used. I do remember the day my Father returned home in 1946. He came in the kitchen door, and was so big and loud, I was frightened and ran to hide behind the settee! It took me some time to accept him. Unfortunately, Dad's experiences in Burma left him sterile, so my parents were never able to have another child that they’d hoped for.
