When the war started, I was living in Sheffield – which of course was making munitions. One air raid stands out.
We were living in a block of flats and were used to air raids, but this one went on longer than most. We all went down to the basement. This was not the age of baby food you could buy of course, so mums had to make do. My elder sister (8 years older than me) went upstairs where there was a café and found some milk which was heated on saucers over candles. The bombing went on for 24 hours. I remember when the raid ended we went outside and Sheffield was flattened – out flats were the only things left standing.
